ASICS Gel-Kayano 32 Review

TRIED AND TESTED

Irish Runner Magazine have teamed up with Intersport Elverys, Ireland’s leading Sports Store to review a selection of newly launched running shoes.

Introduction

My Background: Flat Feet and Overpronation

I run about 35-40 kilometres a week, mostly on roads and pavement. I am a midfoot striker with flat feet and noticeable overpronation. A while back, I injured my left foot, and after some time in physiotherapy, I switched to ASICS stability shoes to help protect my form, and most importantly, to avoid getting injured again. I’ve used the ASICS Gel-Kayano 29 and 30.

Earlier this year, I went for a gait analysis. The recommendation was consistent, stay with ASICS, especially the Kayano line. So when the Kayano 32 came out, I decided it was time for an upgrade.

Testing Experience: ASICS Gel-Kayano 32 — The Shoe That Finally Got Me

Over the course of 2 weeks, I logged just over 80 kilometres in the Kayano 32. Everything from easy runs, tempo runs and long runs. And, of course, the Irish rain made its appearance more than once.

The standout quality? Balance.

Midsole: Soft but Supportive

The midsole is the real transformation here. It cushions nicely without feeling spongy, and it provides the support I need. It’s that rare mix of soft and stable. The midsole feels forgiving on impact, for someone with flat arches, it’s a great mix. There is a quiet stability to the ride that keeps everything aligned, even on longer runs.

It was a rainy Sunday morning in Dublin, the pavement is wet, the drizzle won’t quit, and I am 3/4 through a 16K long run. Usually, this is when my flat arches start giving in. But not this time, I wasn’t feeling about my feet. For me, that is a huge change.

Upper: Comfortable and Secure

The upper is well-padded, a pure comfort, and offers solid lockdown. The gusseted tongue is a nice touch, preventing any movement. It breathes reasonably well on warm days. The shoe feels like it’s working with my foot, not against it. Overall, it’s one of the more comfortable uppers I’ve worn in a stability shoe.

Outsole: Grippy and Built for Rain

This is where the Irish runners have to give an appreciative nod. This part impressed me. I run on a couple of rainy days, and in a park with wet leaves and puddles. No sliding, no last minute foot corrections. Just steady, grounded running with solid support and balance. On one particularly wet run, I actually forgot the ground was soaked.

Verdict: A Reliable Daily Trainer

The Gel-Kayano 32 doesn’t try to be trendy or flashy. It doesn’t have carbon plates or impossible weight specs. What it does have is trustworthiness. If you’re someone with flat arches, who battles overpronation, who runs in unpredictable weather, this shoe feels like it was built for you.
