Brooks Ghost 16
Introduction: Brooks Ghost 16 synonymous for comfort and cushioning.
When looking for consistency and reliability in a running shoe you really don’t need to look any further than Brooks’ newly Launched Ghost 16. The Ghost line has been one of Brooks’ top selling shoes for some time now and shows no sign of slowing down (if you pardon the pun).
While looking back on Brooks’ newest shoe’s predecessor it’s worth to note both the features that have stayed the same and some of the upgrades and changes you get in the Ghost 16. One thing is for sure, the durability, stability and consistency that Brooks fans expect from the Ghost line are all delivered.
Midsole: The nitrogen infused DNA LOFT V3 foam used in the Brooks Ghost 16 provides many different positive aspects for the shoe itself. Many Brooks fans will be happy to know that the stable, slightly firm, yet very cushioning foam DNA LOFT seen in version 15 has transitioned over into their latest model with some slight tweaks.
In comparison to Brooks’ most recent release in their Glycerin line with the Glycerin 21, you see less foam used in the midsole of the Ghost 16 which is not necessarily a bad thing. With a 12mm drop in the midsole, the shoe weighs in at 9.5oz or 269.3g- giving it more of a lightweight and “bouncy” feel which you may not get in some of Brooks other neutral support cushioned shoes.
Upper: Brooks have found a good balance between both breathability and comfort when it comes to the upper on the Ghost 16. On the shoe you see a dotted pattern across the entire air mesh upper. Although it may be a slightly thicker upper than what you see on some newly launched in today’s market, once again Brooks have provided a comfortable, breathable, protective, roomy and attractive shoe upper that is expected from the Ghost line.
The roomy and breathable toe box isn’t the only positive to come from the upper of the shoe, as when we take a look at the back of the shoe you can see a well-padded heel counter and a plastic plate on the outside of the upper to provide as much Achillies protection as possible. Speaking of good padding, the tongue also provides excellent comfort and lockdown.
Outsole: Seen in the newly launched Glycerin 21, Brooks continue to opt for the RoadTack outsole and it looks like it’s here to stay. The bottom of the Brooks Ghost 16 is where you really get to see this shoe shine as it ticks all the boxes and does exactly what Brooks suggests the shoe should do.
The RoadTack rubber outsole is at the forefront when it comes to making the shoe durable. It gives the shoe a more stiff feel on the ground and adds to the overall stability, but due to reduction in foam in comparison to other shoes in the same category as the Ghost 16, it does not compromise the lightweight and “bouncy” feel the shoe has to offer.
The outside of the shoe has a wide footprint. The comfortable and breathable upper combined with outstanding traction and stability underfoot makes this shoe an option for long and easy training miles all year round.
Verdict: It is clear to see that Brooks are continuing to raise the bar in the stability shoe world and many athletes seem to keep finding themselves reaching for the latest Brook shoe for their easy and longer runs and it is clear to see why. From the recently launched Glycerin 21 and now of course the Ghost 16, Brooks fans are merely spoiled for choice when it comes to everyday running.
The Ghost 16 is yet another Brooks shoe that has certainly lived up to what we expect from a Brooks trainer with promising durability and stability. This may not be a shoe you would choose for those faster speed training sessions or on race day- but it is one that will help you get to the start line as fit and ready as possible.
From the DNA LOFT V3 foam, to the breathable upper and finally the stable and durable outsole, I’m happy to recommend this shoe as an excellent choice for training. When picking up the shoe you can go true to size which also leaves a nice roomy fit in the toe box.
