Rhasidat Adeleke once again lowered her 400m national record this evening with a stunning performance in America.

Adeleke, who is still only 20, stormed to victory at the Big 12 Championships in Texas clocking a superb time of 50.33s.

The Tallaght athlete knocked over one tenth of a second off her previous mark which was set earlier this month.

The time is a new NCAA record, puts her second in the world for the distance this season behind Femke Bol’s world record of 49.26s, and moves her to 13th on the World Indoor All-Time list.

Before this year the national record for the distance had been held by Karen Shinkins since 2002.

Rhasidat Adeleke continues scintillating start to 2023

Adeleke, who is in her junior year at the University of Texas, has had a magical start to 2023.

As well as twice breaking the national indoor 400m record, she also clocked a time of 22.52s for 200m in January, itself a new Irish record.

Last summer Adeleke narrowly missed out on a place in the 400m final at the World Championships in Oregon and finished fifth in the final of the event at the European Championships in Munich.

She will miss next weekend’s European Indoor Championships to focus on the NCAA’s but expect to see her back on European soil in the summer ahead of the World Championships in August in Budapest.

Earlier today Andrew Coscoran broke the national 1500m record in Birmingham clocking 3.33.49.

The Balbriggan man finished third producing a class time at the final of the World Indoor Tour.

Luke McCann finished fourth to move second on the Irish Indoor All-Time list, while Nick Griggs broke his own Irish U20 indoor national record by four seconds to finish seventh.

Coscoran and McCann are part of a 16 strong Irish team that head to the aforementioned European Indoors in Istanbul, Turkey next week.
