Another busy evening lies ahead for Irish athletes competing across Europe with just over one week to go until the Irish Life Health National Senior Track and Field Championships and the closure of the qualification window for the World Athletics Championships in Eugene, Oregon which take place next month.
Oslo is the venue for this evenings Diamond League event with the Bislett Games taking place in the Norwegian capital. While there is no Irish interest in the main televised Diamond League programme, there is involvement both before and after the main television coverage.
Nessa Millet (St. Abban’s AC) is expected to feature in the pre-programme 400m Hurdles. Millet has been in good form this season and ran a Season’s Best of 57.82s in Geneva, Switzerland last weekend. Her PB of 57.29s set back in 2019 puts her seventh on the Irish All-Time list for the event. She will be hoping to continue her strong form this evening. Her race is scheduled to open the programme with a start time of 4.25pm Irish Time.
Tonight also promises to be very exciting as a strong Irish 4x400m Women’s relay team is entered to race. The race is the closing race on the programme. Sophie Becker (Raheny Shamrocks AC), Phil Healy (Bandon AC), Roisin Harrison (Emerald AC), and Sharlene Mawdsley (Newport AC) will make up the team. The Irish record goes back to the World Championships in Daegu, South Korea in 2011 where the team of Joanne Cuddihy, Marian Heffernan, Claire Bergin, and Michelle Carey ran 3.27.48. Top 16 positions at the end of qualifying windows are required to make the World and European Championships. The race gets underway at 9.07pm Irish Time.

Elsewhere tonight Mark English (Finn Valley AC) is entered to race in the 800m at the Meeting Internacional Memorial Cansino in Castellón, Spain. English has already secured the standard for the World Championships having ran a PB and Irish record of 1.44.71 at this meet last year, however, has yet to secure the automatic qualifying standard for the European Championships in Munich, which stands at 1.45.90. The Donegal man has already secured a couple of impressive wins this season, most recently last weekend at the British Milers Club meet in Watford where he ran a Season’s Best of 1.46.42. Qatari athlete, former World Championship finalist and three times Asian champion Musaeb Abdulrahman Balla has the fastest Personal Best in the field with 1.43.82. The race is scheduled to start at 7.35pm Irish Time.
